R3: Conference on Race, Research and Responsibility
January 16-17, 2019 | University of South Carolina - Columbia, SC
The notion that our various social institutions, specifically education, can be used as levers to promote societal change has been widely accepted in the public discourse. Thus, in a time of political and social unrest and racialized violence (including specific targeting of people of color in individual, institutional, and societal discourses; behaviors; policies; and practices), there is a need for researchers and scholar-practitioners to engage in responsible research and practice that promotes transformative change.
The purpose of the Conference on Race, Research, and Responsibility is to bring together researchers and practitioners from various disciplines to examine education’s role in addressing and/or perpetuating systemic oppression. In this sense, education can be defined broadly to encapsulate P-20 institutions as well as well as other institutions and/or disciplines that intersect with education.
Mark Gooden and Gloria Ladson-Billings will headline the R3 Conference.

To engage in this dialogue, we invite researchers and practitioners to submit proposals connected to the conference’s purpose and/or any or all of the aforementioned fundamental questions. Again, we welcome submissions that reflect all areas of educational interest. The Center for Innovation in Higher Education remains committed to an interdisciplinary approach, and we encourage all to be a part of this larger conversation.
